What is porcelain stoneware?

Although it’s very popular in modern construction in both home and business interior design, not everyone knows what porcelain stoneware is. Essentially, it’s an extremely compact ceramic material that is obtained from a mixture of different natural raw materials (clays, sand, etc.) which is then fired at very high temperatures to make it waterproof and non-porous. The difference between traditional red stoneware and modern porcelain lies in the fact that the latter is a complex material that can be made in many sizes and with all kinds of finishes.

What are the characteristics of stoneware?

While stoneware has always been appreciated for its extreme durability, today technology has made it possible to take it further. One of the main benefits of porcelain stoneware is that it’s a safe and hygienic material, as its compact and nonporous nature makes it ideal for surfaces that may be in contact with food.

Another benefit is that it’s extremely easy to maintain. If you are wondering how to clean porcelain tiles and maintain their natural beauty for a long time, you have simply to wipe them with a damp cloth soaked in a neutral detergent as they’re waterproof and resistant to chemicals.

Finally, among the features of porcelain stoneware most appreciated by architects and designers are its great versatility and the dozens of finishes available, ranging from the more modern and essential concrete effect to more classic and sophisticated varieties such as marble- or stone-effect porcelain stoneware.

Difference between porcelain stonewear and ceramic tiles

We have seen what stoneware is, but it’s worth mentioning the difference between stoneware and ceramics. Although at first glance they may seem similar, ceramics undergo a different production process, especially in the pressing and firing stages, which makes it a more fragile and delicate material. It goes without saying that this also affects durability. Porcelain floor or wall tiling will be more resistant to impact and wear, and therefore ideal for even the most used rooms in the home, such as the kitchen or bathroom.

In addition to the technical aspects, there are also aesthetic differences. Not only is porcelain available in large slabs, providing maximum design freedom, but it offers a wider choice when it comes to finishes. Among the most modern and sophisticated are undoubtedly the polished finish, glossy and luxurious, and the leather finish, inspired by the texture of leather with a soft and pleasant feel.
